I mention this in all my reviews, but I buy these beans specifically for long distance backpacking. They rehydrate very quickly by adding hot water or more slowly by adding cold water. I mix in my own spices, dehydrated vegetables, powdered coconut milk and eat it over instant mashed potato or instant ramen or instant rice. It's a MUCH cheaper and healthier alternative to the ready-made backpacking foods comercially available. I tell every hiker I know about Garden Valley, as eating well on trail makes such a huge positive difference in the overall outdoors experience.
